The RYA Sail for Gold Ball is back!

Usually a celebration of US independence, this 4th July will see the British sailing community come together in London to celebrate the sailors of the Olympic and Paralympic teams striving to sail for gold at Rio 2016.
The Sail for Gold Ball, held only in each Olympic year, serves as both a British Sailing Team fundraiser and a celebratory send-off for the selected Games sailors, this time on their way to Rio in pursuit of gold in their respective 10 Olympic and three Paralympic events.

The Royal Southern Yacht Club (RSrnYC) has an active J/80 fleet and attracts many more of the class to its summer series of regattas run annually from May through to September, in addition to match racing J/80s in the annual Grade 2 Match Cup.

Report & Photos: Phil Riley
'Quintessentially English madness on a beautiful summer's evening', in the words of Royal Southern Yacht Club team captain Mark 'Tommo' Tomson, is as good a description of the Bramble Bank cricket match as you'll find.

Mr David Mead
The newly elected Commodore of the Royal Southern Yacht Club, David Mead, has vowed to 'make use of the legacy that the highly successful 175 celebrations this year leaves astern of us.'
David Mead was elected Commodore at the Hamble-based Club's recently held AGM, replacing Mark Inkster who had completed his two year tenure as Commodore during what has arguably been the Club's busiest two years in its 175 year history.

Royal Southern Cruising Committee Away-day to the State Rooms and Queen's Diamonds Exhibition at Buckingham Palace
Royal Southern Cruising Committee Away-day to the State Rooms and Queen's Diamonds Exhibition at Buckingham Palace
Once upon a time, early in a Diamond year, with a feeling in the air of tradition and anniversaries, a plan was hatched to make an expedition to view the Queen's Diamonds, to be exhibited at the Palace in her Diamond Jubilee Year. Excitement mounted and a cohort came together to put the plan into practice.
In a delicate dawn, a shadowy group formed by the door of the Boomerang Club (not the usual gathering - far more respectable) and each new arrival was issued with his instructions. "Don't lose the ticket."

Family Fun Day 2012
Family Fun Day 2012
What a pity. I arrived too late to see the Dirty Shirt Race, but the poor Race Officer was still breathless from running between the start and finish lines along the offshore pontoon. This will give you an indication of the seriousness of the events still to enfold.
Lunch was made much more of an occasion by the stirring efforts of the Hamble River Singers and the Ukele Band. I detected an overlap between these, which could have been confusing, but the atmosphere was already full of goodwill, and the song sheets were circulating to be used either to support the plates of lasagne or bangers, or to identify the chorus and perhaps join in, although I think the lunch won in most cases.

Our Commodore Karen Henderson-Williams was recently interviewed by Sasha Twining on BBC Radio Solent's H20 slot.
Karen was asked about her childhood and how she got into sailing with her parents, how she progressed from dinghies into keel boats and about her role in helping to develop youth sailing at the Club. She explained her current role as well as her stewardship of the Royal Southern as only the second lady Commodore in the Club's 179 year history. Karen also discussed her aims and objectives for the Club going forward. It's a great listen, and we hope you enjoy it.
