Report:Louay Habib Images: Tim Wright
With five one design classes and a mixed IRC division of asymmetric yachts of similar speed, getting a good start at the Landsail Tyres J-Cup is crucial. The racing amongst the 66 examples of the J Boat design is nothing short of thrilling and spectacular.
A stronger gradient breeze, piping up to 16 knots, provided near planing conditions for the light weight flyers. Only two more races are scheduled for tomorrow's final day and favourites for the four UK National titles are emerging.

Well over 400 sailors enjoyed a fantastic start to the Landsail Tyres J-Cup in partnership with B&G.
Despite a forecast of very light winds, an early morning sea fog burnt off, as an easterly breeze of five knots piped up to over 14 knots with bright sunshine by the end of the day.
There were three races for all six classes in the Eastern Solent, and with five one design classes and a tight rating band for the IRC Fleet, races were won by seconds with thrilling encounters across the fleet of 66 J-Boats.

Event Report - 2016 Cowes / Deauville race
The annual pilgrimage to Deauville got underway on Friday morning of the May Bank holiday - with the start brought forward to 10.30 to ensure every boat made it through the lock gates at our destination.
The weather forecast looked great - sunshine and a light easterly wind, force 2 - 3, for the next 24 hours - but the weather had other ideas!

A Cool’ish View from Hot Rats
A Cool’ish View from Hot Rats
What a frustrating race and anyone sailing who persevered and finished deserved a prize!
The fleet thoroughly approved of the morning start which, in conjunction with the lock opening times, meant the fleet, given the average crossing times, would be in early morning. Unfortunately the weather forecast by Friday morning suggested that this might be a bit tight given the light to non-existent winds.

Mid week rally to Beaulieu
Mid week rally to Beaulieu

"Early sun on Beaulieu water lights the underside of oaks"

It wasn't quite like John Betjeman's poem 'Youth and Age on Beaulieu River' when the hardy bunch of mid week ralliers sailed round to Bucklers Hard.  In spite of the weather 12 boats went to Bucklers Hard bringing around 30 people to a very lively pontoon party.

Our Commodore Karen Henderson-Williams was recently interviewed by Sasha Twining on BBC Radio Solent's H20 slot.
Karen was asked about her childhood and how she got into sailing with her parents, how she progressed from dinghies into keel boats and about her role in helping to develop youth sailing at the Club. She explained her current role as well as her stewardship of the Royal Southern as only the second lady Commodore in the Club's 179 year history. Karen also discussed her aims and objectives for the Club going forward. It's a great listen, and we hope you enjoy it.
