One Ton Cup Day One - Thrills and Spills
One Ton Cup Day One - Thrills and Spills
The Solent is the chosen playground for the FAST40+ Class and the first day of the One Ton Cup had swings, roundabouts and a few helter skelters. A northerly breeze, pumping out of Southampton Water, was flicking the windometer into the upper twenties, and a building sea state added to boat handling issues. Three tough windward leeward races tested the stamina of all the teams. Breathless, salt-encrusted, but also deliriously happy with a fantastic day on the race course, there was plenty of banter at Hamble Yacht Services Event Centre after racing- truly a full on foam up.  Updated - Day 1 Video

When the Cruising Committee plan the mid week rallies we usually say 'we hope to have a BBQ on a lovely evening at Newtown' with our fingers crossed. This year the finger crossing worked!

Flying down to Rio
Flying down to Rio
A sign of things to come perhaps? Chris Mansfield awards top prize to Helena, with the runner-up being Bjørnar!

A personal message from Paralympic 2.4mR sailor Helena Lucas MBE
"Once again the Royal Southern have been the perfect hosts for our 2.4mR Solent regatta.
We had 10 boats racing on a course just off Coronation, giving us great tidal conditions similar to Rio. With the help of Matt Grier I organised the regatta to give me a final week of racing before heading off to Rio on Monday.

Cruiser Race 2016
Cruiser Race 2016
With all 10 boats assembled in Yarmouth, we made our way to The Royal Solent Yacht Club for the briefing and supper.
The start the next morning on Saturday 16 July was at 0830 by Black Rock. The CRO, Graham Nixon on Magic was on his own but using the VHF & a hooter did a good job starting us on time. The wind was from the south west about 12 knots with sunshine. It was a fast passage to the Needles with a strong ebb tide.

Cowes Week delivers the goods for the Royal Southern YC
Cowes Week delivers the goods for the Royal Southern YC
The weather gods provided the Royal Southern Yacht Club, one of the Cowes Combined Clubs that run the annual Cowes Week Regatta, the sort of summer event they used to get a decade ago! Conditions combined to produce a Cowes Week as good, if not better than, most of us can remember and the Royal Southern played its part in full.
More than 40 Royal Southern members entered their boats across the full range of classes, in addition to which members provided four Committee and Support boats and 30 Race officials.

Oysters at the Royal Southern
Oysters at the Royal Southern
Oysters don't get to race that often and so don't have IRC ratings. However David Tydeman, CEO of Oyster Yachts, is the custodian of results from many Oyster Weeks in the UK, Mediterranean and Caribbean, so there are Oyster ratings to race with and the results of Royal Southern Oyster Week 2016 show just how close that racing can be.
