OOJAH's Atlantic Odyssey
OOJAH's Atlantic Odyssey
Another in our occasional Cruising Logs series.
We are now well & truly weathered in with heavy rain showers & 25 kts of wind gusting to 35 so we're rocking a bit in the outer harbour. We met up with some old Guernsey friends for lunch at the Guernsey YC & are joining Tim & Karen Gabriel tonight so it's not too bad, but when we'll be on our way goodness knows?

Winter Series Wrap Up…
Winter Series Wrap Up…
The Inaugural Royal Southern Yacht Club Academy Winter Series got underway in late November having lost one day to winter storms. What followed was two days of exciting, close and breeze-on sportsboat racing in J70 and J80 classes.
After a short postponement race one got underway in a building breeze of 20 knots or so, with conservative starts from the majority of the fleet. A short, 3 lap course was set which was eventually shortened owing to the building breeze.

Taking down Christmas decorations can be a rather sad occasion but not this year
Taking down Christmas decorations can be a rather sad occasion but not this year
Taking down Christmas decorations can be a rather sad occasion but not this year. Coffee was served at 9.30 and after a short briefing the sun finally emerged to shine on 25 smiling ladies and 4 gentlemen who all worked with stunning speed and seemingly effortless efficiency to take down and pack all the decorations. By 11.15 ( yes just over one and a half hours of work!) everyone sat down...

Nikki Curwen, a member of the Royal Southern has recently completed the Mini Transat, a solo yacht race across the Atlantic in a 6.5m boat. With only paper charts and a basic GPS for navigation, it's back to basics.

Christmas Rally 2015
Christmas Rally 2015
A gloomy, dank December day did not deter 19 boats from making it across the Solent to Cowes for the annual Christmas Rally - this year hosted by the Royal Yacht Squadron. Half the boats took advantage of their Haven and were counting their blessings as the heavens opened in the afternoon but the powers above were smiling on the Cowes Yacht Haven contingent and allowed a break in the weath...

Training 5 days a week on the water throughout the winter based in Lorient with training races covering parts of the Solitaire race course allowing me to study the tide, effects and become acquainted with the coastline.

A Bash at the Baltic
A Bash at the Baltic
Another in our occasional "Cruising Logs" series. This time from Members Mike and Louis Dellar aboard Vela cruising the Baltic in September 2014.
The week before we were due to leave, everyone took pleasure in telling us what a wonderful forecast we had for getting to the Baltic; and buoyed by this we began to dream of a single hitch to Lowestoft, a day's rest, then on to Holland, etc, etc.
Mmm.....first day we overslept, and for our penance, spent the next 12 hours beating into a light easterly. By the time we had got past Brighton the wind was down below 8 knots, so we decided enough was enough, and bailed out into Newhaven.
