Striptease: Season so far
The start of this season has gone exactly to plan. We set out to complete the Warsash Spring Series with solid results that would contribute towards a mid fleet position building on last seasons fluctuating results. The crew consisted of Harry Dyer as bowman and Huw Roberts and myself alternating between helm and middle-man roles. This was a change in structure as we were missing our bow 'lady', Emma Henderson Williams who completes her Gap year work soon.
By the end of weekend two we held 2nd position out of the 32 boats racing. This was thanks to well coordinated boat handling in the heavy airs of weekend one where we posted 7th and 14th positions. It was one the second weekend however where a lot of effort and training had paid off.
Patience and pro-active boat positioning on the course in fluky breeze sealed a narrow 5th in race one. Race two was sailed in a steady force 3 where we again worked hard for an effective first beat to round the windward mark in third place and defend the position to the end whilst occasionally attacking Geoff Carveth for first.
For the rest of the series we sustained steady results resulting in 8th overall in a fleet which had grown to 62 by the final weekend. I think the result marks the beginning of the next stage of our SB3 campaign. We outlined at the end of last season that consistency was what we wanted to move onto and we have epitomised that initiative so far.
We would also like to thank the Royal Southern Sailing Committee, Laser Performance and Mike Rogers who helped organise the training we received with Chris Draper and Mark Rushall at the 'SB3 Speed Clinic'. Harry, Emma Dallas and I we in awe of their knowledge and look forward to developing our boat speed skills further this season and making use of Marks tuning matrix!
Sadly we were not able to compete in the Royal Southern's May regatta as a team due to obvious exam commitments for Harry and Huw. However I managed to hitch a ride with Dan Geoghegan on the new Platinum Blonde which kept me sharp at least. But the June regatta will see us in full force ready for a busy summer of competition.
