Cruising at The Royal Southern Yacht Club

If you are not content with simply racing, or perhaps just prefer to travel in a more relaxed manner afloat, the Royal Southern Cruising Section boasts a fine and varied selection of activities for members and friends to participate in.

During the course of each month throughout the season, the Cruising Committee has planned such a wide variety of events, that there is something going on just about every week. For example:

Mid-Week Rallies to favourites like the Folly, Lymington, the Beaulieu River, Newtown Creek, Bembridge and Yarmouth. The Solent is a different place during the week; it sometimes feels that we almost have it to ourselves. That goes for the quiet anchorages too!

The Cruiser Races. Not that family racing is entirely ignored. We run the Solent Cruiser Race each spring over the May bank holiday weekend. This is a real fun event for all the family, with three legs, one each day to a different destination in the Solent.
The added bonus is that thanks to the clever rules, you may use your engine for part of the race. That way, nobody misses the pontoon or cockpit party! What parties they are too.

The week long 'Cruiser Race' proper takes place later in the summer and typically goes to either Normandy, Brittany or the West Country. A real opportunity for the whole family to meet and make new friends with great socialising at all levels on the lay days and after racing.

Extended Cruises In Company, have included rallies to Dunkirk, Paris, Rotterdam, Stockholm and the Baltic. While we have also been on bareboat charters from the Pacific N/W of the USA, Canada, and Chesapeake, as well as the Bay of Islands and the Hauraki Gulf in New Zealand, or cruising in the Med' such as around Elba organised by the member clubs of the International Council of Yacht Clubs...

Ladies Afloat Days: Another mid-week event on a selected Wednesday each month from May to September, where this time the Ladies take centre stage. These outings are open to any lady member who would like to enjoy a very pleasant day out in company on boats provided by volunteer skippers - usually up to about 6 per boat. No experience required, just a sense of fun! Back in time for tea.

At the smallest extreme, we have an inland dinghy trip up the Hamble for lunch at the 'Horse & Jockey' at Curbridge when the family can indulge "Swallows & Amazons" fantasies returning downstream to the Club in time for tea (or even a "G&T")!

Weekend Rallies And Races
: There are passage races for the club handicap class to Yarmouth and Poole and many members just come along for the socials.

Cruiser Suppers: We kick off the season with our May Cruiser Supper and in the autumn, we round off with another cruiser supper when we reminisce with photos on the big screen, with friends old and new. Come and join us.

Bryan Hughes, Cruising Committee.

 Rally to Bembridge June 2017
Rally to Bembridge June 2017

Once again summer and the rally to Bembridge chose the same weekend.
This year 14 boats tied up alongside the Duver to enjoy unbroken sunshine, good company, great food and perhaps a little wine. It's always great to have both yachts and motor boats together

 Mid-Week Rally to Beaulieu
Mid-Week Rally to Beaulieu

The British know how to make the best of a bad weather forecast!
A few chickened out, but in the end 9 boats (and the crew of another who came by road) headed to Bucklers Hard.
The sea was flat for the motor boaters and the wind strong for the yachties so everyone arrived in dry weather and good spirits.

 2017 Solent Cruiser Race
2017 Solent Cruiser Race

Ten boats came to the start line near Coronation buoy on Saturday 29 April.  Unlike the starts of most Cruiser Races everyone got away quite quickly.
Claire Dresser in Lady Penrose experiencing this event for the first time was too keen and proved to be OCS as the hooter sounded.    The course took them first to Royal Southern in the light easterly wind and then round the east side of the Brambles to other marks and then to Royal Thames off the beach at Calshot, and Party off Egypt Point, back to the mainland shore at Needs Ore and thence to the finish off the Beaulieu River entrance.

Easter Cruiser Rally to the Folly and Beyond. 2017
Easter Cruiser Rally to the Folly and Beyond. 2017
The fine Easter weather prompted sailors to put away the paint rollers and polishers, abandon the garden, ignore the pull of the golf course and go sailing.
Our organiser, Ken Munro, had forecast (?) a sunny weekend and had booked enough spaces for 18 boats at The Folly and on the Beaulieu River; we needed them all. It was great to welcome so many new members to the event.
