Cruising at The Royal Southern Yacht Club

If you are not content with simply racing, or perhaps just prefer to travel in a more relaxed manner afloat, the Royal Southern Cruising Section boasts a fine and varied selection of activities for members and friends to participate in.

During the course of each month throughout the season, the Cruising Committee has planned such a wide variety of events, that there is something going on just about every week. For example:

Mid-Week Rallies to favourites like the Folly, Lymington, the Beaulieu River, Newtown Creek, Bembridge and Yarmouth. The Solent is a different place during the week; it sometimes feels that we almost have it to ourselves. That goes for the quiet anchorages too!

The Cruiser Races. Not that family racing is entirely ignored. We run the Solent Cruiser Race each spring over the May bank holiday weekend. This is a real fun event for all the family, with three legs, one each day to a different destination in the Solent.
The added bonus is that thanks to the clever rules, you may use your engine for part of the race. That way, nobody misses the pontoon or cockpit party! What parties they are too.

The week long 'Cruiser Race' proper takes place later in the summer and typically goes to either Normandy, Brittany or the West Country. A real opportunity for the whole family to meet and make new friends with great socialising at all levels on the lay days and after racing.

Extended Cruises In Company, have included rallies to Dunkirk, Paris, Rotterdam, Stockholm and the Baltic. While we have also been on bareboat charters from the Pacific N/W of the USA, Canada, and Chesapeake, as well as the Bay of Islands and the Hauraki Gulf in New Zealand, or cruising in the Med' such as around Elba organised by the member clubs of the International Council of Yacht Clubs...

Ladies Afloat Days: Another mid-week event on a selected Wednesday each month from May to September, where this time the Ladies take centre stage. These outings are open to any lady member who would like to enjoy a very pleasant day out in company on boats provided by volunteer skippers - usually up to about 6 per boat. No experience required, just a sense of fun! Back in time for tea.

At the smallest extreme, we have an inland dinghy trip up the Hamble for lunch at the 'Horse & Jockey' at Curbridge when the family can indulge "Swallows & Amazons" fantasies returning downstream to the Club in time for tea (or even a "G&T")!

Weekend Rallies And Races
: There are passage races for the club handicap class to Yarmouth and Poole and many members just come along for the socials.

Cruiser Suppers: We kick off the season with our May Cruiser Supper and in the autumn, we round off with another cruiser supper when we reminisce with photos on the big screen, with friends old and new. Come and join us.

When the Cruising Committee plan the mid week rallies we usually say 'we hope to have a BBQ on a lovely evening at Newtown' with our fingers crossed. This year the finger crossing worked!

 Cruiser Race 2016
Cruiser Race 2016
With all 10 boats assembled in Yarmouth, we made our way to The Royal Solent Yacht Club for the briefing and supper.
The start the next morning on Saturday 16 July was at 0830 by Black Rock. The CRO, Graham Nixon on Magic was on his own but using the VHF & a hooter did a good job starting us on time. The wind was from the south west about 12 knots with sunshine. It was a fast passage to the Needles with a strong ebb tide.

The forecast was for breeze at 12-17kts; we had upwards of 25kts. Undaunted, 35 guests on 5 club boats and Wetwheels set off from the club. The sun shone on us and everyone had a great day on the water. There was a trip up Southampton water with a more sheltered run up to Burseldon and a dash across the Solent to East Cowes or the Folly. The team on Wetwheels even managed a run ashore in...

Deauville Race & Rally

Now in its 55th year, this 102 mile event is jointly organised by the Royal Southern Yacht Club, Royal London Yacht Club, Yacht Club de France and Deauville Yacht Club.

This year’s event promises to get the season off to a flying start with a great weekend of passage making and socialising. There will be a dinner on the Thursday evening at the RSrn YC / RLYC for members and guests.

Berthing in Deauville is in the Bassin Morny, with a dinner on the Saturday evening and prize giving on the Sunday morning. This year there will be “Golf Sunday”, now in it’s fourth year. The golf will take place on Sunday after the prize giving.

It’s quite usual to see owners and crews retrieving their golf clubs from deck lockers and cabins upon arrival in Deauville.
There is a fantastic golf course in Deauville with stunning panoramic views over Deauville. The grounds are beautifully kept and the fairways are superb with carefully manicured greens.

The team at Deauville Yacht Club is once again looking forward to seeing nos amis anglais for the 55th edition of the Cowes Race.
Family members and friends who are not racing but wish to enjoy the weekend can use the ferry to Le Havre or the fast cat to Caen.

The berthing in Deauville is complimentary, please register your yachts name and details with the Sailing Office to give an indication of numbers of yachts attending.

Vous souhaitons un passage sûr et une mer calme. Au plaisir de vous voir à Deauville.
