Recent applicants for membership were being interviewed, while 35 visitors on the day were so impressed by what they saw that they applied for membership on the spot.

Flying Squid weren't actually included on the Royal Southern's Fitting Out Supper menu on Saturday night, but they played an amusing role in Mike Golding's after dinner presentation! Those guests fortunate enough to have booked their tickets in good time for the sell-out Supper hosted by the Commodore Karen Henderson-Williams, were treated to an evening commencing with a Joseph Perrier Champagne reception, fine wines, a superb dinner, special awards for special people and the stuff of legends in the form of yachtsman, Mike Golding OBE.

Academy Frostbite Day 3 Report
Academy Frostbite Day 3 Report

Fog, rain and the prospect of no wind greeted competitors in the final day of the Royal Southern Academy Frostbite Series. Despite the conditions, the fleet were able to locate the race course that the committee had managed to set in the building 6 - 8 knots of breeze.
Racing for both J/70 and J/80 classes got away promptly. With the prospect of the spring series starting the following day, the J/70 starts were keen, X-Ray being displayed on several occasions. The J/80's pushed the starts slightly less - perhaps they were having issues locating the line in the now dense fog!

Academy Frostbite Day 1 Report
Academy Frostbite Day 1 Report

The Royal Southern Academy's 2017 programme got off to a flying start on Saturday 28th January.
With a steady breeze of 8 - 12 knots and glorious sunshine belying the winter weather of the previous week; day 1 of the frostbite series represented some top-quality winter sportsboat racing.
The race committee made best use of the fantastic early season conditions, squeezing in 5 good races in the usual short course windward - leeward format of Academy racing.

Gentlemen's Lunch report
Gentlemen's Lunch report

The sell-out inaugural Gentlemen's Lunch organised by the Ladies Committee can fairly be described as a great success.
The highlight of the event, however, was the post-lunch speech by Noj White, who entertained the assembled with numerous tales of his career with BOAC and later British Airways as a Concorde and Boeing 747 pilot, not all of which would be repeatable in mixed company.

Our Commodore Karen Henderson-Williams was recently interviewed by Sasha Twining on BBC Radio Solent's H20 slot.
Karen was asked about her childhood and how she got into sailing with her parents, how she progressed from dinghies into keel boats and about her role in helping to develop youth sailing at the Club. She explained her current role as well as her stewardship of the Royal Southern as only the second lady Commodore in the Club's 179 year history. Karen also discussed her aims and objectives for the Club going forward. It's a great listen, and we hope you enjoy it.
