Report: Louay Habib Images: Paul Wyeth
The 16th edition of the J/80 World Championship got off to a flying start with two spectacular championship races for the 48 boat fleet. A southwesterly wind of 12 knots built during the afternoon, piping up to over 20 knots in the gusts.

With wind over tide shortly after the start, the combat zone boiled up with the J/80s powering upwind, then surfing downwind, in a full on foam up. Rayco Tavares (ESP) leads the championship, Kevin Sproul (GBR) is second and Luke Patience (GBR) third.

Although the April Ladies Afloat had been cancelled due to a terrible weather forecast the May and June were held in brilliant sunshine and gentle breezes.
As usual we met at the Royal Southern at 1000 hrs for coffee and to sort out who was going on which boat.

Rally to Bembridge June 2017

Once again summer and the rally to Bembridge chose the same weekend.
This year 14 boats tied up alongside the Duver to enjoy unbroken sunshine, good company, great food and perhaps a little wine. It's always great to have both yachts and motor boats together

Mid-Week Rally to Beaulieu
Mid-Week Rally to Beaulieu

The British know how to make the best of a bad weather forecast!
A few chickened out, but in the end 9 boats (and the crew of another who came by road) headed to Bucklers Hard.
The sea was flat for the motor boaters and the wind strong for the yachties so everyone arrived in dry weather and good spirits.

June Rib Rally to Sea House
June Rib Rally to Sea House

We had our first rib rally of the season on Saturday at Sea House.
We were on the edge of a rain line on a weather forecast all week but luckily on the day it was dry if a little breezy.
It was too windy to rib round so some drove and eight took the ferry from Hamble and cycled the scenic coastal path.

Magnificent Seven for J.A.T.
Magnificent Seven for J.A.T.
Report & Images: Louay Habib

Kevin Sproul's name has been etched on the J/80 Open National Championship Trophy for the seventh time. Racing J.A.T., the Scottish helmsman scored no lower than a fourth in nine races, to win the UK National title in a fleet of 21 boats. Jon Powell's team, racing Betty, is the runner up, just a point ahead of Olympic Silver Medallist, Luke Patience, racing Ryoko Meka.
The Mediterranean conditions persisted for the entire three days for the J/80 Open National Championship and with air temperature touching 30ºC, the windless mornings were replaced by a fickle sea breeze in the afternoon. The Royal Southern Yacht Club's Race management team, were roundly applauded for keeping competitors informed, and for delivering nine excellent races in difficult conditions.

Report & Images: Louay Habib

Hosted by the Royal Southern Yacht Club, in conjunction with the UK J/80 Class Association, 21 teams enjoyed two races on the first day. An average wind speed of 14 knots, and subtle wind shifts, produced conditions with the potential for big gains, from reading the breeze and getting the boat on the plane.
Kevin Sproul and Jonathan Powell, both from Warsash SC, shared a win each today. Kevin Sproul is top of the leaderboard by a single point. Nick Haigh representing the Royal western YC, scored a 5-2, to finish the day in third just a point ahead of Royal Southern member, Chris Body in fourth.

Our Commodore Karen Henderson-Williams was recently interviewed by Sasha Twining on BBC Radio Solent's H20 slot.
Karen was asked about her childhood and how she got into sailing with her parents, how she progressed from dinghies into keel boats and about her role in helping to develop youth sailing at the Club. She explained her current role as well as her stewardship of the Royal Southern as only the second lady Commodore in the Club's 179 year history. Karen also discussed her aims and objectives for the Club going forward. It's a great listen, and we hope you enjoy it.
