October Folly Rally Weekend.
October Folly Rally Weekend.

Typically, the annual late Cruiser supper marks the official close of the season when we Cruisers reminisce about the good times we have had through the year in the 25 or so events that the Cr/Committee have put on. Friday 14th October was no different.
A healthy compliment of members sat down to a great supper of tasty Gammon in sauce (Chairman's favourite - thanks Maggie) followed by Summer Fruit Tart - another popular choice. Most of us decided to team this appropriately with what was not quite the last of the summer wine, whilst viewing the member's action photos on the large TV screen.

Lymington - Horse & Jockey Rallies
Lymington - Horse & Jockey Rallies

With equal numbers of sail and power boats this could be described as a hybrid rally, with five of each! A great two days, with a pleasant beat to Lymington for those with sails, and a calm ride for the motor-boaters.
We moored on the Dan Bran pontoon, just downstream from the Royal Lymington Y.C., an excellent viewpoint for watching activity on the river - ferries, dinghy sailing, all the usual sailing and motor boat traffic, and a few paddle boarders too. Perhaps we should be thinking of paddle board rallies?

Awayday on the Basingstoke Canal
Awayday on the Basingstoke Canal

Hamble Square, 0845 for 0900 start. Spot the picnic bags in the sunshine. Coliseum Coaches, Dean at the wheel. 0910 and we were off after the usual "hands up anyone who isn't here" from one of the Committee Members. Safe hands, then.
Dean deposited us soon after 1000 at Colt Hill Wharf in Odiham where our numbers were swelled by a dozen own-steam crew-members. We were 50 mixed Mercury Gardens Residents and R Srn YC Members, some falling into both camps for a cruise on John Pinkerton II on the Basingstoke Canal.

Hamble Classics raises the bar for classic yacht regattas
Hamble Classics raises the bar for classic yacht regattas
The inaugural Hamble Classics Regatta got off to a glorious start over the weekend of 24-25 September with a big entry, big parties, and big weather to match. A total of 65 boats ranging from two tiny Herreshoff gaffers to the mighty Swan 65 Desperado put on show the most inclusive range of classics of recent Solent-based regattas.
When added to the long history of the Royal Southern Yacht Club, now with its new Prince Philip Yacht Haven being able to accommodate half this classic fleet, it was an ideal venue, especially when the Elephant Boatyard supplied a Caribbean-style pontoon rum party along with warm sunshine after Saturday's racing, as one of six supporting partners.
Commenting on the weekend, Sir Robin Knox-Johnston said, "I thought the whole event was most enjoyable. It is just what yachting should be about."

Barbados September Regatta - Cobra is Barbados Bound
Barbados September Regatta - Cobra is Barbados Bound
The sun came out for the final day of the Royal Southern Yacht Club's September Regatta, also incorporating the One Ton Cup. Light winds and warm air, provided comfortable racing conditions, but a fickle sea breeze made for shifty racing in the Solent. Hundreds of club members, sailors and friends gathered at the Royal Southern Yacht Club's Prince Philip Yacht Haven for the presentation.
“The club has hosted world championships before and will continue to do so and the hosting of major events like the One Ton Cup is all down to a lot of hard work by the staff and volunteer members of the Royal Southern.” commented Rear Commodore Sailing, Graham Nixon. “There has been a substantial investment in the club with the opening of the Prince Phillip Yacht Haven and we have a wonderful combination of facilities ashore and afloat. Well done to Peter Morton and his team, it has been an honour for the club to host the One Ton Cup.”

One Ton Cup Final Report - Morty Wins the One Ton Cup
One Ton Cup Final Report - Morty Wins the One Ton Cup
It was fifth time lucky for Morty, but the wait is now over. Peter Morton's Carkeek 40+ Girls on Film has won the 2016 One Ton Cup. The Cowes based team were worthy winners having scored no worse than a fourth in nine races. Peter Morton has come second in the One Ton Cup on two occasions and the attempts to win the prestigious trophy span over three generations.
“It has been unfinished business.” smiled Peter Morton, rinsed in champagne. “The team on Girls on Film have been absolutely fabulous. I would also like to thank the Royal Southern Yacht Club and Principal Race Officer, Stuart Childerley and his team for outstanding race management. Also Rob Greenhalgh for coming up with the idea of the FAST40+ Class and putting it together. For those of you that haven't won, I would say just be patient, your time will come.”

Barbados September Regatta Day One - Festival Atmosphere at the Royal Southern
Barbados September Regatta Day One - Festival Atmosphere at the Royal Southern
The Royal Southern Yacht Club's fourth and final regatta of the season, got off to a wonderful start. Despite pewter skies and a cold northerly wind, the Southern's waterside dining room was decorated with Palm Trees and tropical colours for a Caribbean Party in honour of regatta series sponsor, Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc. Aston Martin Chichester brought their latest model, giving a luxurious and festival feel, to a truly autumnal day's racing in the Central Solent.

One Ton Cup Day Two - Six Hour Marathon
One Ton Cup Day Two - Six Hour Marathon
After six hours of intense racing on the second day of the One Ton Cup, Peter Morton's Carkeek 40+ Girls on Film holds a significant points advantage at the top of the leader board. However, the devil is in the detail. The brutal intensity of the battle was personified by the fact that over the course of today's four race marathon, Invictus was actually four seconds faster after time correction. Morty's blip was Race 4, scoring a fourth place. However, the team from Cowes now have an impressive lead, after winning three of today's races.  Updated - Day 2 Video

Our Commodore Karen Henderson-Williams was recently interviewed by Sasha Twining on BBC Radio Solent's H20 slot.
Karen was asked about her childhood and how she got into sailing with her parents, how she progressed from dinghies into keel boats and about her role in helping to develop youth sailing at the Club. She explained her current role as well as her stewardship of the Royal Southern as only the second lady Commodore in the Club's 179 year history. Karen also discussed her aims and objectives for the Club going forward. It's a great listen, and we hope you enjoy it.
